The Legend of Child-Sending Fish

There are plenty of waterfalls, deep pools and giant salamanders among the northwest slopes of the deep ditches of Qingyan Mountain. It is said that giant salamanders were sent by Child-Sending Buddha to five holy dragons to safeguard the mountain gate.

After Emperor Zhenwu was crowned at the Heavenly Palace, he wanted to thank the five holy dragons for their help, and gave each of them a dragon pool at Saiwudang, then he commanded Child-Sending Buddha to send several gate-keeping children to keep them company.

With the children in her arms, Child-Sending Buddha arrived at Saiwudang. When she saw that all the holy dragons were living in the water, she dropped the children into the pools, and all the children slid into the fish bellies, and became giant salamanders with hands and feet and sang songs in the night. Hence, it is known by the local people that when they see giant salamanders playing in the water, they can find the Dragon Palace by following the water. and“Giant Salamanders Playing in the Water” has become an attraction of Saiwudang. Giant salamanders are also called Child-Sending Fish, which implies having many offspring.
