Taichi and Giant Salamander

As is recorded in "Xizebuyi", once upon a time, at the origin of Lishui River in Wuling Mountain Area (now Wulingyuan in Zhangjiajie), there were no sign of human habitation but cliffs everywhere. A man in his fifties with his wife came here to escape from the war. Suffering from hunger and cold, the couple were weak and feeling hopeless. When they were about to drown themselves, they found some fish in the water with four legs and sound like babies. The man caught some fish to eat and found the taste extremely delicious. After that, the man felt refreshed, his gray hair turned black and shiny, his dropped teeth grew again, and his eyesight became perfect. Similarly his wife also became younger, and her skin turned smooth and shiny again. While they were childless before, they had eight children afterwards, all healthy and smart.

Once a Taoist Priest (Jade Emperor in legend) named Zhang Daoling, came here to seek medicines. He met the man and asked a bowl of soup from him. After having the soup he suddenly felt relaxed and refreshed and in a flash of light, he saw the image of two fish put together head to tail. He felt surprised and asked the man for the reason. The man told him his incredible experience, then the Taoist Priest decided to go into the deep pool, were he suddenly realised the mystery of Ying and Yang, and thus established Taichi.

It is circulated among the people that giant salamanders, as a kind of medicince, has significant effects on improving intelligence, look and skin as well as nourishing Yin and kidneys, supplementing blood and Qi. It can also be used to treat anemia, cholera, dysentery, malaria and menses.
