Dragon Totem and Giant Salamander

As is recorded in “Haiwaixijing”a classic from Xia Dynasty, Giant Salamander was called Dragon Fish and apotheosized. “Dragon fish lives in the north of wild Zhuyao It has the shape of a carp, and is also called Ni Fish. God rides the fish to travel in the world.” Obviously, the people of Xia Dynasty knew the prototype of dragon was the giant salamander. According to “Where and When Zodiac Culture Originated”, the Zodiac culture was originated from Wei River Basin of Shaanxi Province and Gansu Province about 4,000 to 6,000 years ago, and the relationship between dragon stereotype and giant salamander was also revealed. The image of Ni Fish has a human face with beard at its jaw and a human shape. Some scholars believe that Ni fish is the prototype of Fuxi ,the ancestor of human beings. As some ancient legends go, “Fuxi has a snaky body”; actually, Fuxi has a “Ni fish body”, also the "dragon body” in subsequent legends. Hence the totem of dragon is from Ni fish, and the Chinese people call themselves the heir of the dragon.
